Manage and Prevent Your Horse’s Health Issues

Horses are magnificent animals, full of grace, strength, and an undeniable presence. For horse owners, ensuring the health and well-being of these majestic creatures is a top priority. However, maintaining their health can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially given the variety of ailments horses can experience.

From laminitis to colic, dental problems, and even viral infections, horses are susceptible to a range of health challenges. Gladiator Equine will guide you through some of the most common health issues in horses, their causes, symptoms, and the steps you can take to prevent or manage them effectively. By staying vigilant and well-informed, you can help your horse live a long, healthy, and happy life.

Common Health Issues in Horses

1. Laminitis

Laminitis is a painful inflammation of the hoof tissues that connect the hoof wall to the underlying bone. It’s often triggered by metabolic conditions, overeating grain or lush pasture, obesity, or even trauma.

Horses suffering from laminitis may exhibit lameness, reluctance to move, heat in the hooves, and an abnormal stance, where they lean back to shift their weight off their front feet.

Prompt veterinary attention is critical. Treatment typically involves anti-inflammatory medications, corrective shoeing, and dietary management. Prevention includes maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding overfeeding, and managing the horse’s weight. Regular hoof care by a farrier is essential.

2. Colic

Colic refers to abdominal pain in horses, which can arise from various causes such as gas buildup, intestinal impaction, or twisted intestines. It’s one of the most common (and sometimes life-threatening) health issues in horses. Signs of colic include:

  • Restlessness
  • Pawing at the ground
  • Rolling
  • Sweating
  • A lack of appetite
  • Severe cases may involve violent rolling or thrashing

Treatment depends on the severity and cause but may involve pain relief, nasogastric intubation, IV fluids, or surgery in extreme cases. Prevention includes ensuring proper hydration, feeding a high-fiber diet, avoiding sudden feed changes, and regular dental care to promote effective chewing and digestion.

3. Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)

Equine herpesvirus is a highly contagious viral infection affecting horses. It can cause respiratory disease, abortions in pregnant mares, and, in severe cases, neurological issues. Diagnosis is confirmed through laboratory testing. Symptoms include:

  • Nasal discharge
  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Loss of coordination in more severe forms

Currently, there’s no cure, but supportive care under veterinary guidance can help manage symptoms. Vaccinations, isolating infected horses, and maintaining hygiene within stables can help prevent outbreaks.

4. Strangles

Strangles is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus equi that affects the lymph nodes in the neck and head. It is highly contagious and can spread through direct horse-to-horse contact or shared equipment like buckets and brushes. Signs include:

  • Swelling in the throat area
  • Fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Difficulty swallowing

Diagnosing strangles typically involves bacterial cultures from nasal swabs. Treatment involves antibiotics (in some cases), drainage of abscesses, and isolation of infected horses. Hygiene practices and vaccination can prevent the spread of this disease.

5. Dental Issues

Horses frequently develop dental problems such as sharp enamel points, abnormal wear patterns, or missing teeth as they age. Poor dental health can affect eating and lead to other health concerns.

Signs of dental issues include difficulty chewing, weight loss, head tossing, and abnormal mouth movements. Regular dental exams by an equine dentist or veterinarian are essential.

Dental issues are typically managed with routine floating (filing) of the horse’s teeth. Ensure annual dental checkups, and for older horses, consider more frequent exams.

6. Arthritis

Arthritis, or joint inflammation, is a common issue in older or heavily worked horses. Causes include wear and tear, joint injuries, or genetic predisposition. Symptoms include:

  • Stiffness
  • Swelling in the joints
  • Lameness, especially after exercise

Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication, joint supplements, physical therapy, and in some cases, joint injections. Maintaining a healthy weight and providing appropriate exercise can prevent or mitigate arthritis in horses.

7. Peptic Ulcer Disease

Peptic ulcer disease involves the development of painful ulcers in a horse’s stomach lining. Stress, concentrated feed, and prolonged NSAID use can trigger ulcers.

Common signs include poor appetite, weight loss, girth sensitivity, and mild colic episodes. Gastroscopy is used to diagnose ulcers.

Veterinary-prescribed medication, such as omeprazole, is the gold standard for treatment. Prevent ulcers by providing free access to forage, reducing stress, and feeding smaller, frequent meals.
