WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FETLOCK JOINTS
The fetlock joint in a horse is a critical part of its leg anatomy, located between the cannon bone and the pastern. It is equivalent to the human ankle or the ball of the foot. This joint plays a crucial role in absorbing shock and providing flexibility and support during movement. It helps the horse maintain balance and stability, especially during activities like running, jumping, or turning.
The fetlock joint can be prone to injuries and conditions such as sprains, arthritis, or inflammation (known as “fetlock joint effusion” or “windgalls”). These issues can arise from overuse, trauma, or degenerative changes.
Proper care, including regular veterinary check-ups, appropriate shoeing, and managing workload, is essential to maintain the health of the joint and prevent injuries.
